YouTube ‘App’ With Home Screen, Phone Remote Widely Rolling Out for Chromecast: Report

A new YouTube app-like experience for Chromecast appears to be spreading out extensively. The update is mostly for Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast (3rd generation) devices that were introduced in 2018. The experience has not been made available to earlier Chromecast devices for the first time, according to 9to5Google, which first reported on the upgrade.

According to reports, Google began rolling out these functionalities for the Chromecast YouTube app to a select group of users early this year. Although the updated layout looks to be more user-friendly than earlier versions, non-Premium users have complained that the upgrade has resulted in more advertisements. Previously, when consumers cast a video to their TVs, Chromecast provided a very limited viewing experience. It had a simple video player and a splash screen that said "Ready to Watch."

Users are claiming that a more extensive video player has appeared, with the ability to modify resolution, shut caption settings, and add films to a playlist/queue, according to 9to5Google. The user interface has also been updated, with the YouTube home page taking the place of the splash screen. On Chromecast, the YouTube app now has a left-hand navigation rail featuring Search, Home, News, Music, Gaming, Movies & Shows, Subscriptions, and Library choices. The main area of the UI is now made up of video rows, similar to the native YouTube app for Android TV and other smart televisions.

Google began rolling out the new capabilities to more people in July of this year. A new remote control layout for Chromecast was included in the release. It came with a D-pad and a back button. A voice search button was also located beneath the D-pad on the remote. The Cast icon on the YouTube app may now be used to access this remote. The symbol for the remote shows beneath the usual volume slider. Some physical TV remotes are reportedly compatible with Chromecast's new YouTube interface.
