FIFA 23 Could Be Called EA Sports FC, as EA Considers Dropping FIFA Branding

FIFA 22 might be the game's final installment. EA Sports is considering removing the FIFA logo from their games, which is a result of a license arrangement with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association — or FIFA. While Electronic Arts hasn't said what it will be named in the future, trademark registrations filed in the United Kingdom and the European Union on October 1 — the day FIFA 22 was released — and October 4 indicate the term "EA Sports FC." This is a moniker that EA Sports has used a lot in their FIFA games.

In a blog post on EA's website on Thursday, EA Sports group general manager Cam Weber wrote, "As we look ahead, we're also considering the possibility of rebranding our worldwide EA SPORTS football titles." "This means we're examining our FIFA naming rights deal, which is distinct from all of our other official agreements and licenses across the world." The FIFA renaming won't affect any of EA Sports' other licenses, as the company's 300-plus agreements are distinct. That implies FIFA 23, or EA Sports FC 23, or whatever it's called, will feature over 17,000 athletes from over 700 teams, as well as 100 venues hosting over 30 competitions.

Since FIFA International Soccer in 1993, EA has used that term in its football games. Many of FIFA's high-ranking executives have been indicted on wire fraud, racketeering, and money laundering charges as a result of corruption investigations into FIFA's 2018 Russia World Cup bid and 2022 Qatar World Cup bids. If EA Sports does something about that, I'd think it's too late. In late 2014, Sony dropped its FIFA World Cup sponsorship, which included PlayStation branding in all stadiums.

With that stated, EA Sports FC 23 does not have the same ring to it as FIFA 23. Konami, its former opponent, has already made a terrible name decision, switching from Pro Evolution Soccer/Winning Eleven to eFootball. Now it appears to be EA Sports' turn.
