Netflix has begun broadcasting the AV1 codec to a limited number of TVs and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles. The Alliance of Open Media has granted the AV1 codec a royalty-free license, making it the most recent video codec in the industry (AOMedia). Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Intel, Netflix, Microsoft, and others are among the companies that support the codec. Netflix is now offering AV1 streaming on a limited number of TVs.
However, owing to PS4 Pro compatibility, Netflix material may be streamed in AV1 to any TV connected to the game console. In February of last year, Netflix began offering AV1 video streaming on its Android app. Netflix published a blog post announcing the debut of AV1 playback on TVs. Netflix will first provide several of its popular films with the new codec, including Money Heist, because AV1 requires more CPU hours to encode. "We have a stream analyzer built into our encoding workflow that guarantees all Netflix AV1 streams are consistent with the specification.
To ensure flawless playback of AV1 streams, TVs with an AV1 decoder must also have decoding capabilities that satisfy the standard requirement ", Netflix noted in a blog post. Netflix claims that when using AV1 streaming, it noticed a 2% reduction in playback latency. Furthermore, visible decreases in streaming quality were reduced by up to 38% on some TVs. Netflix has begun streaming movies and episodes encoded in the AV1 codec to compatible TVs as well as TVs linked to the PS4 Pro, as previously stated. The AV1 streams need a television with an AV1 decoder that satisfies the requirements.
Netflix stated that they are working with other partners to expand the number of devices that can stream AV1 content. However, the streaming platform has yet to release information regarding the supported devices. According to The Verge, Netflix will support the AV1 codec on select Samsung 2020 UHD Smart TVs, Samsung 2020 UHD QLED Smart TVs, and Samsung 2020 8K QLED Smart TVs.
Samsung The Frame 2020 Smart TVs, The Serif 2020 Smart TVs, and The Terrace 2020 Smart TVs are among the models on the list. According to the source, AV1 streaming capability will be available on some Amazon Fire TV devices running Fire OS 7 or above, as well as a limited number of Android TV devices running Android OS 10 or higher. Netflix began streaming AV1 encoded material through its app for Android mobile devices in February of last year, replacing the VP9 codec. It was initially only available for a few games.
