Samsung’s Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus launched, delivers revolutionary camera experiences

Last year's Galaxy S21 series, by most accounts, failed to meet Samsung's sales projections. The S21 and S21 Plus were surrounded by more Android competition than ever before, making it difficult for them to distinguish out on their own. Samsung gave the basic model a "cheap" initial impression by employing plastic materials on the rear instead of glass, which didn't help things.

With yesterday's announcement of the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus, Samsung is attempting to correct some of those wrongs and re-establish them as premium, trustworthy, flagship-grade smartphones — even if they lack the Note DNA of the S22 Ultra. Unlike that smartphone, these are more similar to last year's phones with minor design tweaks. The displays on both versions are flat, measuring 6.1 inches on the S22 and 6.6 inches on the Plus, and both have a resolution of 2340x1080.

The "contour" camera housing no longer contrasts with the phone's overall color, as it did with the purple S21. Samsung is also the first phone manufacturer to employ Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the front and back of both the normal S22 and S22 Plus; there's no more "glastic" to cheapen the feel. Both phones will be available in black, white, green, and pink gold, according to Samsung.

They will be ready on February 25th and are available for presale now. The Galaxy S22 costs $799.99, while the Galaxy S22 Plus costs $999.99. Both have 128GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM. A 256GB model will be available as well, but it will have the same amount of RAM. Among all of the regular technical enhancements, Samsung is emphasizing camera performance the most. The main 50-megapixel camera sports a sensor that is 23% bigger than the S21's.

There are also 10MP telephoto (with 3x optical zoom) and 12MP ultra-wide cameras on both phones. Samsung claims to have made significant advances in night photography, claiming that the images will now be more detailed. Part of this is due to pixel binning (the primary camera still produces 12MP photos) and Samsung's "adaptive pixel technology." The business also claims that it can now discern individual strands of hair in portrait images, allowing it to keep a person in focus while blurring the backdrop more precisely.

The hair and glasses are still a difficulty for phone cameras and phony bokeh. The S22 and S22 Plus' screens feature a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, although they may be reduced to 10Hz depending on the content on-screen to save battery life. Samsung claims to utilize a new "vision booster" technology to keep color saturation and clarity even in intense light. The S22 Plus has the same 1,750 nits peak brightness as the Ultra, but it can only be reached in direct sunshine.

(The S22's peak is 1,300 nits lower.) In the United States, both phones are powered by Qualcomm's 4-nanometer Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, but in some international markets, Samsung's own Exynos chips will be used. They'll come pre-installed with Android 12 and Samsung's OneUI 4.1. The battery capacity of the S22 and the Plus differs significantly: the S22 has a 3,700mAh battery, while the Plus has a 4,500mAh battery. So it's very obvious who will be the endurance champion. Charging speed is likewise slower on the smaller S22, which is restricted to 25-watt wired charging against 45-watt wired charging on the Plus; both peak out at 15-watt wireless charging.
