MICROSOFT: Microsoft is testing a Windows 11 desktop watermark for unsupported hardware

Microsoft is now testing two new approaches for alerting Windows 11 customers when they install the operating system on incompatible hardware. In the most recent Windows 11 test releases, a new watermark has emerged on the desktop background, coupled with a similar warning on the settings app's main page. If the test build is operating on incompatible hardware, the desktop watermark simply says "system requirements not fulfilled," and it shows alongside the build number, which is only displayed on evaluation or pre-release versions of Windows.

It's comparable to, but less noticeable than, the semi-transparent watermark that displays in Windows if you haven't activated the operating system. The settings warning was discovered earlier this month by Twitter user Albacore. It's unclear if Microsoft wants to make this desktop wallpaper warning broadly available. The software company recently announced that it will test new features for Windows 11 that might not make the final cut. Nonetheless, the new warnings indicate that Microsoft intends to change how Windows 11 displays on incompatible devices.

Microsoft's minimal hardware requirements for Windows 11 have sparked debate, especially because the operating system only officially supports Intel 8th Gen Coffee Lake or Zen+ and Zen 2 CPUs and higher. This change put millions of PCs behind, but there is a simple method to get around this limitation and install Windows 11. Anyone who employed that workaround may now see these warnings in future Windows 11 releases.

Microsoft has previously used similar warnings for unactivated versions of Windows, and features such as dark mode, personalization settings, and themes cannot be updated until the system is activated.
