Returnal's planned 3.0 "Ascension" upgrade will include cooperative multiplayer and a new survivor mode (named "The Tower of Sisyphus"), according to developer Housemarque during Sony's recent State of Play livestream.
The update is the first time the tough sci-fi roguelike has received major new material. Last year's 2.0 version prioritized key quality-of-life enhancements, such as the long-awaited option to pause a run without losing your progress and a picture mode.
Co-op mode is only accessible online, with no split-screen option, so you'll need an internet connection and a PlayStation Plus membership to team up with a pal and try to survive Atropos' terrible riddles. In the new Tower of Sisyphus region, the game's first-person "House" sequences, and challenge mode, players will also be unable to play together.
Meanwhile, The Tower of Sisyphus will provide players with a sequence of 20 progressively challenging floors to struggle their way through – presumably with some new secrets to unearth along the way.
