GOOGLE CHROME: Chrome OS tests variable refresh rate support!!!

According to Kevin Tofel of About Chromebooks, Google is testing support for variable refresh rates (VRR) in the Chrome OS 101 Dev Channel. To utilize the functionality, you must enable a flag at chrome:/flags#allow-variable-refresh-rate, which Google claims may be used with "capable screens." By synchronizing the refresh rate of a display with the frames-per-second (FPS) of whatever is on the screen, VRR helps to prevent screen tearing.

Google's test of the functionality might signal a smoother gaming experience on Chrome OS, which makes sense given that Steam is "coming soon" to Chrome OS, according to Google. There have also been rumors regarding the availability of three possible gaming-focused Chromebooks, a prospect that has been bolstered by a new Chrome OS flag that adds RGB keyboard capability.

VRR compatibility, on the other hand, might indicate a faster refresh rate for future Chrome OS tablets. Chrome OS is currently extremely clumsy when used in tablet form, as my colleague Dan Seifert points out in his evaluation of the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 and the HP Chromebook X2 11.

If Chrome OS tablets are to compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple, they'll require VRR. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 range has a refresh rate of 120Hz, while the iPad Pro features ProMotion compatibility (simply another name for VRR) that smooths down scrolling movements.
