Apple's new Mac Studio was shown to contain an intriguing feature: replaceable SSD storage. However, a second video from YouTuber Luke Miani demonstrates that the Mac Studio can't be updated since Apple appears to be banning new SSDs on a software level, according to AppleTrack. The Mac Studio's storage isn't soldered to the mainboard, unlike all of Apple's previous M1-powered computers, as Max Tech discovered during his weekend dissection.
Getting to the SSD requires unscrewing the panel, unscrewing the rubber ring on the bottom of the device, and taking out the unshielded power supply. Which implies that, unless you're prepared to remove your entire computer, you won't be able to avoid Apple's obscenely costly SSD upsells for extra storage. This corresponds to Apple's stated position: "Mac Studio storage is not user accessible," the firm states on the product website for the Mac Studio.
"Consider configuring to a greater capacity if you anticipate you'll need additional storage space in the future." But the concern isn't necessarily that the Mac Studio as it is presently isn't upgradeable by users. It's with Apple's mentality that they've arrived at this stage. Because the Mac Studio has SSDs that can be removed. Apple's design does not entail burying it beneath rubber sheets and a potentially hazardous power source, or locking it on a software level.
However, Apple purposefully made it hard to increase the Mac Studio's internal storage. Whether it was to discourage end users from tearing apart their computers in search of cheaper SSD upgrades or to nudge customers toward it’s more expensive options (which, due to their non-replaceable nature, implicitly urge you to buy more upfront, lest you be caught with too little after the fact) — neither option is good for the company.
