UBER: Uber is temporarily removing the ability to split fares

According to Mashable, Uber plans to temporarily disable the option to split fares next month. Uber claimed in a statement to Mashable that it is "in the midst of rethinking how riders divide fares." "We know this is a popular function, so rest assured that a new, enhanced version will be available in the coming months."

Some consumers were also notified of the change through email, albeit it appears that the email was largely wrong. According to a snapshot of the email contained in Mashable's post, "We are sad to let you know that as of March 21st, we will be discontinuing the 'Split fare' option, which allows you to split the price of a journey with other riders."According to Uber representative Conor Ferguson, this email was sent to riders in the United Kingdom.

Ferguson, though, claims that the March 21st deadline was incorrect, and that the function will be withdrawn in April. While the email Mashable obtained states that Uber is "continuously striving to improve your Ride sharing experience in various innovative ways," it makes no mention of Uber's plans to provide a new option to share fares in the future.

The ability to divide prices was initially offered by Uber in 2013, and it's beneficial if you want to split the cost of a journey. Lyft's "Divide Pay" function was decommissioned in 2018, but the company has subsequently devised a workaround: starting in 2020, you'll be able to pay using Venmo and split the fare of a ride through the Venmo app. Ferguson also suggested splitting an Uber fare using Venmo or another mobile payment tool.
