Facebook Messenger adds support for Shortcuts, allows users to send silent messages, GIFs and many more

Facebook Messenger has introduced a new set of features known as Shortcuts, which make use of the messaging service's instructions. Users of iOS and Android devices may now execute instructions in the chat window to conduct various actions, such as informing everyone in a group or sending a message discreetly without causing other users to be notified. They can also use Facebook Messenger to transmit GIFs and ASCII emojis.

The new capabilities are reminiscent of MSN Messenger's now-defunct secret 'Easter Egg' instructions, and are intended to make specific operations on Messenger easier by using one-word commands. Shortcuts for Facebook Messenger on Android and iOS, which will be accessible starting today, were announced on Tuesday by the Meta-owned messaging service. People may now utilize the Shortcuts feature to send a notice to all users in the conversation by typing @everyone.

The command can be used to draw the attention of group members to a message that asks a question or to remind them of an older message.Shortcuts on Messenger may also be used to send a message to a user or group without telling them, using the /silent command. Messages sent using this command will not alert the user, which might be useful for texting friends in various time zones without bothering them. Competitor messaging app Telegram, which launched the functionality in 2019, also has the option to transmit messages discreetly without bothering the receiver.

It's worth noting that several Facebook Messenger capabilities that were introduced earlier this year have yet to be made available to all users. Users in the company's Secret Conversations mode, which employs end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for conversations, received an enhanced messaging experience in January. Screenshot alerts, emoji reactions, and Vanish mode are among the new capabilities, which were unveiled ahead of the company's scheduled switch to E2EE for all Messenger discussions.
