WhatsApp launched a number of voice message enhancements on Wednesday, making it easier for users to interact with their contacts on the app using voice notes. Some users previously had access to features including the ability to pause and restart voice message recordings, waveform visualisation, out of chat playback, and draft preview before the upgrade. On forwarded voice communications, WhatsApp added a remember playback option as well as rapid playback.
Aside from the new features, WhatsApp said that its users communicate an average of seven billion voice messages every day. The out of chat playback capability is one of the most beneficial features WhatsApp has made as part of its voice message-focused upgrades. It allows you to listen to voice messages outside of the chat window, allowing you to multitask or read and answer to other chats on the app at the same time. If you leave WhatsApp or move to another app, your active audio message will not play in the background.
The functionality, dubbed "global voice message player" at the time, was first observed in testing among iOS beta testers in January. Last month, it was also made available to select iPhone users. For desktop users, the capability was just discovered in development. WhatsApp now allows you to pause and resume voice messages, allowing you to collect your thoughts or just continue your recording if you're interrupted. It was first made available to certain iPhone users in January, and it was recently discovered in beta testing for Android and PC users.
Waveform visualisation is the next important addition to WhatsApp voice messaging. It displays a visual depiction of the sound on the voice message, making it easier for consumers to follow along with the recording. When you're listening to voice messages from your contacts, the visualisation shows as well. WhatsApp had been testing waveform visualisation with beta testers on Android and iOS for a few months, much like the other capabilities.
