MICROSOFT: Microsoft rides the cloud, Office and Windows to sustain growth in Q3 2022

Microsoft's financial results for the third quarter of 2022 are in, and the company has yet again posted double-digit growth: revenue of $49.4 billion and net income of $16.7 billion. Revenue has increased by 18%, and profit has increased by 8% year over year. The cloud is responsible for a large portion of Microsoft's growth this quarter, with server and cloud services revenue up 29 percent and Microsoft Cloud up 32 percent to $23.4 billion.

There were plenty of reasons to believe Microsoft would keep a grin on its face this quarter. While the PC industry has begun to decline from its pandemic highs, Chromebook sales, not Microsoft Windows machines, have accounted for the majority of the recent drop. Meanwhile, the Xbox just had its best sales in 11 years, easily outselling the PS5, which has a limited supply.

Indeed, Microsoft's "more personal computing" business, which includes Windows and Xbox, grew 11% to $14.5 billion in the third quarter, and "Windows OEM revenue growth," which should include the price manufacturers pay to put Windows 11 on the laptops and desktops you buy, grew 11%. On the earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella said, "Enterprises are adopting [Windows 11] at a faster rate than any previous release."

Xbox hardware revenue increased by 14%, while Xbox content and services revenue increased by 4%, "driven by growth in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions and first-party titles," for a total increase of 6% in gaming revenue to $3.74 billion. On the earnings call, Nadella boasted about gaining gaming market share, claiming that 10 million people have now streamed games from Microsoft's cloud — one of the first concrete numbers we've had for cloud gaming's popularity.

Google Stadia doesn't share numbers and Nvidia's GeForce Now numbers include anyone who's ever used the free trial. Microsoft's Surface devices appear to be doing well, with a 13 percent revenue increase after a surprising 8 percent increase last quarter (surprising because the company previously warned of a dip). The Microsoft Surface will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2022.
