Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 launched, touts Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 battery gains

Qualcomm announced its latest smartphone platforms, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoCs today. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is the successor of the Snapdragon 778G SoC, while the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is an improvement to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 platform.

Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 has a 10% better CPU speed and a 30% higher power efficiency than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, on the other hand, is said to be 20% quicker than its predecessor in terms of graphics rendering. The chipmaker also presented its Wireless AR Smart Viewer reference design, which is built on the Snapdragon XR2 platform, alongside the new mobile platforms.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 can run at 3.2GHz, which means it can give up to 10% more CPU performance than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that launched in December. The new Snapdragon processor has the same architecture as the current flagship Snapdragon model, with the same Kryo CPU and Adreno GPU. It does, however, have a higher clock speed for improved performance.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is also capable of providing up to 60 minutes of additional playtime on a single charge, according to Qualcomm.

In terms of photography, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features Qualcomm's newest Snapdragon Sight technologies, which allow for 8K HDR video recording and HDR+ compatibility. Under the hood, there's an 18-bit triple ISP that promises up to 64-megapixel images. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 also has the Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System, which offers up to 10Gbps 5G speeds. In addition, the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 System supports Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 6. Bluetooth v5.3 connection is also available.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon Sound Technology has been incorporated into the new platform, enabling high-resolution music playback, crisp voice calls, and a greater audio experience while playing games and films, according to Qualcomm. Qualcomm apX Lossless sound and LE Audio are also part of the patented technology. This is said to allow for nearly 17 hours of audio playing.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 uses a 4nm manufacturing to handle LPDD5 RAM with a frequency of up to 3200MHz and a size of up to 16GB.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 contains the seventh-generation Qualcomm AI Engine enabling on-device artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning capabilities, which is said to provide up to 20% greater performance per watt than its predecessor. There's also Quick Charge 5 support. It also has USB 3.1 Type-C connection and can show up to 4K with 60Hz refresh rate or QHD+ with 144Hz refresh rate.

Availability timeline:

Smartphone companies such as Asus ROG, Black Shark, Honor, iQoo, Lenovo, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Redmi, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE will employ the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform. Qualcomm said that phones based on the new Snapdragon architecture will be available in the third quarter of this year.
