5 Days Long GIS Training Concludes

Kathmandu. A 5 Days long Geographical Information System (GIS) training and workshop was organized to enhance the capacity of technicians of Tokha Municipality.

Engineers, Computer Officers and Ward Office representatives were among the  28 participants who rigorously worked together to build their capacity in the GIS and Global Position System (GPS) system.

According to Dr. Bhoj Raj Ghimire, Managing Director of Perigee Informatics, partner organization who facilitated the training, the training was customized  for Tokha Municipality.

He said “ This training is equivalent to 3 credit course of a University program which was successfully completed within 30 working hours by the municipal technicians”.

The trainee were exposed to the overview of GIS and its application, GIS software ( Arc Map), Google earth, data collection with the help of handheld GPS device, geospatial database creation and map development. At the 4 th day, the participants themselves worked in a group to explore the possible application of GIS and they came up with interesting idea like crime reporting, disaster alert, resource mapping, tourist route mapping and many more.

One of the engineers who spoke at the closing ceremony stated that they felt ownership of the training as they themselves went to the field to collect various data with the help of GPS device and later visualized them into GIS platform and finally prepared the map out of it.

Dr. Ghimire, who is a doctorate in Remote Sensing and GIS, was himself the principal trainer for the entire 5 days program along with 4 other experts.

Mr. Rajendra Karki, Chief Administrative Officer of Tokha Municipality, chaired the closing ceremony and Ms. Gyan Maya Dangol, Deputy Mayor of the municipality distributed the certificate to the participants.
