REPORT: Apple M2 Pro Chip to go into mass production this year

According to an expert, Apple M2 Pro silicon, which will purportedly be produced on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) 3nm process, will enter mass production later this year. The announcement comes after Apple debuted the M2 processor at WWDC 2022 in its newest MacBook Air (2022) and 13-inch MacBook Pro (2022) notebooks. Mark Gurman has previously stated that the Cupertino-based business is testing a 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M2 Pro processor.

Apple supplier TSMC will begin mass production of the "more powerful M2 Pro processor" later this year, citing analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong Intl Tech Research as per 9to5mac. The chipset is believed to be manufactured using a 3nm technology. If confirmed, the silicon will be more powerful than Apple's Silicon M2, which is created on the same 5nm technology as the M1. Apple introduced its new M2 processor earlier this week at WWDC 2022 in the MacBook Air and Pro (2022).

The MacBook Air is the company's first MacBook Air notebook redesign since the M1-powered MacBook Air debuted in November 2020. The M2 chipset, according to Apple, contains 20 billion transistors and a 10-core GPU. It is said to have 18% better CPU performance and 35% better GPU performance than its predecessor, and to be 1.9 times faster (CPU) and 2.3 times quicker (GPU) than rival 10-core CPUs.

In addition, the new chipset has a new Secure Enclave, media engine, and cognitive engine. As previously stated, Apple is already testing a 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro processor. There is also mention of a "M2 Max" processor codenamed J414 that is reported to feature 12 CPU cores and 38 graphics cores, as well as capability for 64GB of RAM.
