Android 12 officially brings back the dessert names with \'Snow Cone\'

A Google official announced on Twitter that Android 12 is codenamed "Snow Cone." The practice of naming new Android versions after desserts isn't new; Google has previously used names like Ice Cream Sandwich, Marshmallow, and Nougat. With the introduction of Android 10 in 2019, the firm chose to utilize the number sequence for naming its future Android versions, breaking with tradition. Google's latest operating system, Android 12, was launched on Monday, months after it underwent extensive testing in different developer previews and beta releases.

Dave Burke, Google's Vice President of Android Engineering, announced Snow Cone as the dessert name for Android 12 in a tweet on Monday. After Android Pie, which was awarded to the ninth major version of the mobile platform, the current Android operating system is the first in a previous couple of years to earn a specific dessert-themed moniker. The term Snow Cone initially appeared in February, according to Android Central, but it didn't get enough attention because Google had stopped using dessert titles for its new Android versions in 2019. Internally, the Android family did have dessert names, as Android 11 was reportedly dubbed Red Velvet Cake by Google engineers.

Burke proposed the name Queen Cake for Android 10 before abandoning the dessert-themed naming plan. On Monday, the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) published a stable version of Android 12. Manufacturers like as Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme announced the introduction of custom skins based on the new Android version shortly after the debut. However, Google Pixel phones are yet to receive the update. Android 12 introduces the all-new "Material You" design language, which was detailed during Google's I/O developer conference in May after an early developer peek was published in February.

It also comes with additional privacy choices, an estimated location permission, and an on-screen indication that notifies users when the phone's built-in microphone or camera is being used. There are improvements coming later this year, such as an iOS-like ability to opt out of commercial monitoring. In addition, Google has enhanced the overall user experience on Android 12 by improving battery economy and CPU speed. Smoother audio transitions and an enhanced notification shade are among the changes.
