IDC: “Chromebook, Tablet Shipments Decline for First Time Since Pandemic Began”

According to the latest IDC research, Chromebooks and tablets saw their first quarterly fall in shipments since the pandemic began in 2020. While Chromebook shipments decreased by 29.8% year over year in the third quarter of 2021, tablet shipments decreased by 9.4% year over year. The number of Chromebooks shipped fell to 6.5 million, while the number of tablets shipped fell to 42.3 million.

Lenovo is said to have a 23.1 percent market share in the Chromebook category. Apple, on the other hand, dominated the tablet industry with 34.6 percent market share in the third quarter. According to IDC's newest study, lifting limitations in many places resulted in greater expenditure in other categories, lowering Chromebook and tablet demand. The drop is also due to a comparison to a robust third quarter in 2020, when consumer device shipments peaked, according to the research. With 1.5 million sales and a 23.1 percent market share in Q3 2021, Lenovo won the Chromebook sector. However, it saw a 10% drop in annual growth from the same quarter last year, when it delivered 1.7 million devices. Acer ranks second in Chromebook shipments, with 1.4 million units shipped and a market share of 20.8 percent.

With 1.2 million and 1.1 million reported shipments in the third quarter, Dell and HP rank in third and fourth, respectively. With 0.6 million shipments and an 8.9% market share, Samsung finished in last. Almost all of the leading Chromebook manufacturers had yearly growth fall, with the exception of Samsung, which witnessed a 0.2 percent gain. In 2020, many schools and governments went through their budgets to supply gadgets for remote learning, and even individuals bought learning gear in droves. As a result, the education market is likely to reach saturation in the near future. Due to strong sales in the prior quarters, this has a direct influence on Chromebooks and even tablets to some extent, especially in developed regions such as the United States and Western Europe.

Chromebooks, on the other hand, continue to grow in popularity in emerging markets such as Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan and China), Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa, but sales in these regions account for less than a quarter of total Chromebook volume and are therefore insufficient to move the global market." In terms of tablets, according to the latest IDC study, Apple topped the field with 14.7 million devices shipped and a 34.6 percent market share in Q3 2021. With just 14 million units delivered in the same quarter last year, it witnessed a 4.6 percent annual rise. Samsung is in second place, with 7.5 million units shipped and a 17.7% market share. With 4.7 million and 4.3 million units sold, Amazon-branded tablets and Lenovo tablets came in third and fourth, respectively. In Q3 2021, Huawei shipped 2.4 million tablets, capturing 5.4 percent of the worldwide tablet market and placing fifth in the rankings.
