Windows 11 Blocks EdgeDeflector App as Microsoft Forces Users to Open URLs on Edge

Microsoft has chosen to prohibit the popular third-party program EdgeDeflector on Windows 11. Users may use the app to access URLs in browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Microsoft will now compel Windows 11 users to exclusively use the Edge browser to open URLs from the Start menu and Widgets panel search results.

According to a blog post by EdgeDeflector creator Daniel Aleksandersen, the corporation appears to be prioritizing "advertisement, bundleware, and service subscriptions" over user productivity. EdgeDeflector and other third-party applications were created to circumvent Microsoft's proprietary microsoft-edge protocol, allowing links to be accessed in browsers like Chrome and Firefox. The EdgeDeflector software was disabled in a preview edition of Windows 11 last week, which was first thought to be a problem.

However, a Microsoft official confirmed to The Verge that an impending Windows 11 software upgrade will disable all microsoft-edge protocol linkages for all apps. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, the Windows operating system allows unrestricted access to all apps and services, including Web browsers. "At the same time, in both Windows 10 and Windows 11, Windows provides some end-to-end customer experiences. The search experience from the taskbar is one such example of an end-to-end experience that is not meant to be redirected." The representative responded, "When we become aware of erroneous redirection, we release a correction."

In a blog post, Daniel Aleksandersen, the creator of the EdgeDeflector tool, criticized the change. "These are no longer the acts of a firm that is concerned about its product. Microsoft isn't doing a good job of looking after the Windows operating system. "Ads, bundleware, and service subscriptions take precedence over their customers' productivity," Aleksandersen said. This isn't Microsoft's first restricted move; the company previously made adjustments to Windows 11 that made switching away from Microsoft Edge more difficult.

Users of Windows 10 could previously switch to Chrome, Firefox, or any other browser with a few mouse clicks. Users of Windows 11 must, on the other hand, designate the browser as the default to open various file types. Similar solutions, such as EdgeDeflector, have recently been released by Mozilla and Brave. However, Microsoft's impending Windows 11 upgrade will also disable these.
