Samsung to pick Taylor, Texas, for its $17 bln chip plant - WSJ

After the Wall Street Journal claimed that the location of a new $17 billion chip facility in the United States will be Taylor, Texas, South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics confirmed on Tuesday that it had not made a final choice. According to the Wall Street Journal, Texas Governor Greg Abbott will deliver a "economy statement" on Tuesday at 5 p.m. (4:30am).

According to Reuters, a location in Williamson County, Texas, near the city of Taylor, had the greatest incentives package of the places Samsung was evaluating. The world's largest memory chipmaker has announced it is also examining Arizona and New York as potential locations.

The new factory will produce sophisticated logic chips for mobile devices and driverless vehicles, addressing a serious semiconductor shortfall in the worldwide auto sector. The factory would be Samsung's second in Texas, where it already has a chip manufacturing unit in Austin. Samsung has joined competitors TSMC and Intel in the drive to grow chip contract manufacturing in the US, where the industry is considered as a strategic threat to China.

President Joe Biden's administration has pledged billions of dollars in federal financing to increase chip manufacture and research in order to maintain a technological advantage over China and alleviate crucial industry shortages such as automotive.
