Zoom Discontinues Original Chrome OS App, Chromebook Users Are Left with Progressive Web App Option: Report

Zoom's original Chrome OS plugin has supposedly been removed. The Zoom Progressive Web App (PWA) will be the sole choice for users. In June of this year, the video conferencing service released a Chromebook-specific app. The PWA works like a regular app, but it can't do anything natively. The features and functions are given over the Internet.

Zoom's PWA for Chrome OS is claimed to be experiencing a number of challenges right now, but with the recent development, Chromebook users will have no choice but to utilize Zoom's PWA to attend or organize video conferences. Zoom has stopped supporting its original Chrome OS app, according to 9to5Google, preventing users from attending meetings. The original app is no longer available on the Chrome Web Store and can only be accessed via a direct link.

When a user uses Zoom's Chrome OS extension, a message appears that says "Zoom client must be updated to attend this conference," according to the complaint. It might be different on different devices. Zoom announced the debut of the Zoom progressive web application for Chrome OS in June of this year, as previously stated. Chrome OS users may install the PWA in the same way they would an Android app, and it works in the same way as the Zoom app on other platforms.

Customizable gallery views, self-select breakout rooms, live transcriptions, live translations with assigned interpreters, backdrop masking option for privacy, and raised hand and meeting reactions are all available on the Windows or Mac desktop. Zoom claims that PWAs are faster and more useful than traditional apps. It is also reported to use less storage space, making it ideal for cloud-based devices.
