Android Studio Platform Numbers: “Android 10 Running on Majority of Active Devices”

According to the most recent figures released by Google, Android 11 and Android 10 are currently installed on more than half of all devices running the Android operating system. Google no longer publishes frequent updates on Android update adoption on its developer website, instead publishing platform numbers in Android Studio on a semi-regular basis. Google's newest distribution stats do not include platform numbers for Android 12, which was launched in October. However, the preceding three Android versions account for over 70% of all handsets on the market.

9to5Google discovered the newest platform distribution data in Android Studio, where Google periodically gives updates for Android upgrade acceptance. Google used to offer monthly updates, but ceased doing so in 2018, requiring developers to rely on Android Studio to obtain a basic notion of how many people were using recent or older versions of Android. This information can help developers select which Android versions to maintain and which ones to abandon in the future. During this year's Google I/O, the firm announced that Android had installed on over 3 billion devices.

According to Android Studio's most recent distribution data, Android 11 and Android 10 are used by 24.2 and 26.5 percent of devices, respectively. With 18.2 percent of Android smartphones, Android 9 is in third position, followed by Android 8 with 13.7 percent. Android 7 (and 7.1) currently has a 6.3 percent market share, followed by Android 6 (Marshmallow) at 5.1 percent, Android 5 (Lollipop) at 3.9 percent, Android 4.4 (KitKat) at 1.4 percent, and Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) at 0.6 percent of all Android devices. Google had not updated its figures since April 2020, according to the report, and developers may not see any update to the distribution numbers this year.

Android 12 data are presently unavailable on Android Studio, but given that the operating system was only released a month ago, the figures are unlikely to be large. Developers who want to verify these figures may get the current version of Android Studio from Google's website and use the wizard to start a new project to see how many people are running different versions of Android. On the other hand, Apple's developer website lists the distribution of devices running current versions of its iOS operating system. While figures for iOS 15, which was launched in September, are not yet available, Apple's newest figures reveal that 85 percent of all active iPhone devices are running iOS 14, while 8% are running iOS 13, and only 7% are running previous versions of iOS.

Meanwhile, iPadOS 14 is used by 79 percent of all active iPad tablets, while iPadOS 13 is used by 9% and previous versions of the operating system are used by 12% of iPad devices. Apple is scheduled to provide a new update with updated statistics of devices that have updated to iOS 15 and iPadOS 15.
