It was stated in May during the Google I/O 2021 event that Google's Wear OS will be completely overhauled. Wear OS 3, a new operating system developed in collaboration with Samsung, will be available for a limited number of smartwatches in the second half of 2022. Google has launched a new "System updates" interface for existing Wear OS smartwatches in preparation of this upgrade.
It allows consumers to quickly determine the Android version and security patch level of their wearable devices. Currently, the majority of Wear OS updates are sent via Google Play Store or Google Play Services apps. On Wear OS smartwatches, however, updating to version 21.42.18 includes a revised "System updates" interface (Settings > System > About). Users may now view the status "Your watch is up to date" at the top.
The former blue checkmark has been replaced with the installed operating system version (Android version) and the level of security patching (Android security update). Previously, the security patch level could be seen at the bottom of the "Versions" list. In addition, past "System version" systems used letters rather than numbers to signify their level. The new method looks to be more user-friendly than earlier incarnations, and it paves the way for Wear OS 3. According to 9to5Google, the Android 11-based Wear OS 3 will be an optional update for most of the newly announced smartwatches this year.
Google and Samsung have teamed up to create Wear OS 3, which combines the finest elements of Wear OS and Tizen into a single platform. The approach is intended to challenge Apple, the wristwatch market leader. This version of the operating system includes third-party Tile support as well as the ability to move between programs by double-tapping the screen. The interfaces of Google Maps and Google Assistant have been improved. Fitbit's health and fitness tracking updates have also been included into Wear OS 3.
