Solana claims 1 transaction on its network uses less energy than 2 Google searches

According to a survey by the Solana Foundation, one transaction on the Solana blockchain network uses less energy than two Google searches and 24 times less energy than charging your phone. Solana is a decentralized computer network that uses a blockchain ledger to function. It was created by Anatoly Yakovenko. Solana claims to be the world's fastest blockchain, claiming to be able to validate 65,000 transactions per second for less than a cent apiece.

The network is supposed to be a high-performance blockchain that consumes very little energy. According to the paper, a single transaction on the Solana network consumes 0.00051 kWh (1,836 Joules) of energy, while an average search consumes 0.0003 kWh (1,080 Joules). The paper goes on to say that the entire Solana network consumes an estimated 3,186,000 kWh per year, which is the equivalent of 986 American families' annual power usage.

Robert Murphy, an energy and climate expert, was hired by the Solana Foundation in May 2021 to assist outline the environmental effect of transactions executed on the Solana global state machine. Solana's primary building blocks are transactions: All transactions are made when you buy an NFT, make a trade, or do anything else with Solana. Because there is no need for energy-intensive mining on Solana, the network is incredibly eco-friendly. On Solana, activities need far less energy than you may expect. The whole Solana network consumes an estimated 3,186,000 kWh per year, with 1,196 validator nodes and an estimated 20,000,000 transactions.

This is the equivalent of 986 American families' typical power usage. The Solana Foundation wants to launch a program by the end of 2021 to help make Solana's validator network carbon neutral and offset the ecosystem's footprint. According to Statista, one transaction on the Ethereum blockchain uses roughly 644,004,000 joules, which is similar to "more than several thousands of VISA card transactions" based on the average number of transactions and the amount of energy necessary to maintain the network.
