According to MacRumors, Apple's impending macOS 12.1 update will correct some strange interactions between the notched screens on its new MacBook Pros and menu bar apps, which should no longer be obscured behind the notch. Previously, some users noted that if there were too many icons open on the menu bar, they would be moved behind the notch.
Prior to macOS 12.1, "[menu] bar additions on 2021 MacBook Pro laptops may be concealed by the camera housing," according to Apple's changelog. The problem was unusual to begin with, requiring users to have enough menu bar icons (dubbed "menu bar extras" by Apple) to reach the notch's location from the right side of the display, although huge menu bar apps (like iStat Menus) could complete the task.
The latest version fixes a few additional issues, including HDR difficulties with YouTube and MagSafe flaws on the 16-inch MacBook Pro, in addition to the menu bar / notch glitch. Although macOS 12.1 is still in beta, Apple has seeded the release candidate version of the software to developers, so the upgrade (together with the bug patch for the notch issues) should be available to all users in the coming weeks.
