Amazon\'s AWS Outage Shows How Its Complex Cloud Makes Backup Plans Difficult

Analysts and experts told Reuters that major organizations utilizing Amazon's data services learned the hard way this week how the company's cloud unit's complexity and market dominance made it tough to back up their data with alternative providers. The outage on Tuesday was caused by "an impairment of many network devices" in Amazon's Virginia data center area, according to Amazon.

The outage impacted streaming services Netflix and Disney+, as well as trading app Robinhood and Amazon's own e-commerce site, which relies heavily on AWS. On Wednesday, an Amazon spokeswoman informed Reuters that the difficulties had been rectified. The massive amount of damage caused by a network outage in a single AWS region known as "US-EAST-1" demonstrated how difficult it is for businesses to distribute their cloud computing over many regions. Amazon is the world's largest cloud computing company, according to research agency IDC, with 24.1 percent of the global market. Rivals like as Microsoft, Alphabet's Google, and Oracle are attempting to get AWS users to utilize portions of their clouds as backups.

However, according to Naveen Chhabra, a senior analyst at research company Forrester, creating a complex online service that can be swiftly transferred from one provider to another in the event of an emergency is far from straightforward. AWS is really made up of hundreds of distinct services, ranging from fundamental building blocks like processing power and storage to complex services like high-speed databases and artificial intelligence training. According to Angelique Medina, head of product market at Cisco's ThousandEyes, AWS has key "dependencies" inside its own services, where they are tied together in ways that might cause one to fail when another fails. Because AWS's complicated services are frequently built on top of its own more basic services, this is the case.

An issue with a basic function like networking can have a cascading effect on services that rely on it. AWS said the outage was "affecting some of our monitoring and incident response tooling, which is delaying our ability to deliver updates" early on Tuesday. AWS also appears to have important services grouped in its US-EAST-1 region, according to Medina, where another outage last year had a widespread impact. "There's always this compromise between something that's decentralized, something that's safe, and something that's usable," said Charly Fei, product lead for Inter Blockchain Communication at The Interchain Foundation, which focuses on decentralizing computer technology. "There will never be a perfect solution that satisfies all three requirements."
