User Reports: Dell BIOS update is causing Dell PCs to Blue Screen on Boot

Recent Dell BIOS changes are apparently creating boot difficulties on a variety of laptop and desktop models. Installing the newest BIOS upgrades for select Latitude laptops and Dell Inspiron and Alienware Aurora desktops, according to user concerns on the company's community page, prevents the devices from starting. Although the firm has yet to recognize the difficulties raised by consumers, some customers have apparently been able to downgrade their BIOS as a workaround.

The BIOS update issue appears to affect Dell Latitude 5320 and Latitude 5520 laptops (with version 1.14.3), as well as Dell Inspiron 5680 (version 2.8.0) and Alienware Aurora R8 (version 1.0.18) desktops, according to user complaints posted on Dell forums. Installing BIOS upgrades to these versions may cause booting problems for some laptops and desktops, according to reports. After upgrading to the newest BIOS version 1.14.3, a user on the company's community page reported that their Dell Latitude 5320 would not boot.

The power button on the laptop will light up for a few seconds before shutting off again, depending on the user. Before shutting down, the user claims to have seen a blue screen or an error message that says "Time-of-day not set — please run SETUP application." The problem was also published on Reddit, and the issue's homepage presently indicates that 11 additional customers, including another person with a Dell Latitude 5520 laptop, experienced the same issue.

According to the report, the BIOS upgrade appears to have affected certain desktop users as well, including the Alienware Aurora R8 desktop. While in Virtual Reality mode, a member on the forums claims that his Aurora R8 desktop restarted automatically. The customer claims that while starting, they get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), and that they can't get into recovery mode or boot from a recovery USB or Ubuntu USB.

A Reddit user with an Inspiron 5680 claims that they couldn't boot their computer after running Dell system updates, but that rebooting and conducting a disk repair fixed the problem. Dell has yet to respond to the complaints raised in the community forums by users. Gadgets 360 has contacted the firm for a reaction to the concerns and will update this space as soon as we hear back.

Meanwhile, consumers have come up with their own workarounds, such as downgrading the BIOS. One remedy offered by a customer who was afflicted by the recent BIOS upgrade is to downgrade their machines using Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery. Affected customers might try unplugging their laptop's battery and charger, then pushing the power button for 15 seconds before restarting their laptop, according to another remedy offered by a Dell user.
