Russia Fines Twitter for Not Deleting Banned Content, Says Court

A Moscow court fined Twitter RUB 3 million on Thursday for failing to delete content that Russia considers illegal, the latest in a series of penalties against foreign technology companies.

Moscow has stepped up its pressure on Silicon Valley this year, in what critics see as an attempt by Russian authorities to tighten control over the Internet, which they say threatens individual and corporate freedom.

Twitter has stated that it does not allow its platform to be used to encourage criminal activity. A request for comment from Twitter was not immediately returned. Twitter was fined RUB 3 million by Moscow's Tagansky District Court for failing to remove unlawful information.

Later, the court said that GitHub, a software development website that Microsoft bought, had been fined RUB 1 million for the same offense. GitHub, located in San Francisco, did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
