Rivian files new trademark signaling a move to make electric bikes

Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer, has registered a new trademark for bicycles and electric bikes, as well as the structural pieces that go with them. Rivian's action might indicate that the company is considering jumping on the e-bike bandwagon and expanding its portfolio with a product that is less expensive to produce at scale than electric pickup trucks and is more in line with its target "adventure" seeking population.

Rivian informed TechCrunch it had no comment on the situation. Companies sometimes register trademarks for goods they never use, but other automakers are starting to realize the value in the e-bike market, which had a 240 percent increase in sales in the year leading up to July. Porsche introduced two new e-bikes last year that were inspired by the Taycan Cross Turismo.

BMW has recently announced intentions to develop a number of e-bikes and other micromobility vehicles, including the all-electric CE 04 scooter. Rivian announced last month that it would use some of the $13.7 billion it raised when it went public to build a second factory in Georgia (the first is in Illinois) to double its production capacity and produce battery cells – cells that could theoretically be used in batteries for other types of vehicles as well.

Rivian has just submitted a patent for an integrated tailgate cargo system for automotive vehicles, which is effectively a tailgate bike rack that allows drivers to transport a bike in their truck without sacrificing bed room. Perhaps the business, which enjoys providing extras for its R1T vehicle, wants to provide the entire package for its target market — the eco-conscious rugged American adventurer.
