Plaid, the service used by Venmo, Acorns, Robinhood, and more, may owe you some money!!!

Plaid, the financial service used by these apps (and 5,500 others) to link your bank account, has settled a class-action lawsuit alleging that it gathered more financial data from users than was necessary. Plaid allegedly got customers' bank login information "via its user interface, known as 'Plaid Link,' which looked and felt like the user's own bank account login page," according to the lawsuit.

Users were entering their information "straight to Plaid" in actuality. Plaid refutes these allegations, claiming that it was open and honest with its customers. Plaid will pay $58 million to impacted consumers, but disbursements may be limited – the firm claims millions of individuals have used its service, which means there will be more money to divide.

If you're a US person who connected a bank account to an app between January 1st, 2013 and November 19th, 2021, you could be eligible for a claim. If you're unclear if an app you use (or have used) is affected, you may use the settlement's website to search for specific financial applications. Other notable Plaid-powered applications include Chime, Mint, Betterment, and NerdWallet, in addition to the aforementioned.

You may have already gotten an email notifying you about the class action lawsuit; if so, please sure to file your claim by April 28th, 2022. If you didn't receive an email but believe you were impacted, go to the same website and click the "Click Here" option to register a claim. You'll next need to fill out a form with your name and address, as well as a list of applications to which you've linked your bank account. Additional information on the settlement may be found on its FAQ page.
