‘Girls in ICT Nepal’ expands young women’s access to emerging technologies; three‑day training completed in Surkhet and Itahari

Under the collaboration of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a three‑day program on emerging technologies for young women was completed in Surkhet of Karnali Province and Itahari of Koshi Province under “Girls in ICT Nepal.”

Aimed at young women aged 18 to 24 years, the program was held from 7 Shrawan to 9 Shrawan at the Kaushil Event Venue in Surkhet and the Royal Resort in Itahari, providing both theoretical and practical knowledge.

Titled “Skill Building on Emerging Technologies,” the training saw the active participation of over 100 young women in Itahari and more than 70 in Surkhet, the Telecommunications Authority reported.

During the three‑day event, in various sessions, both national and international speakers took part. Over the three days, participants engaged in panel discussions and various sessions on topics including the ICT ecosystem, policy, infrastructure, human resources, gender equality, careers and opportunities, AI, and cybersecurity.

At the inauguration session, the event in Itahari was graced by Koshi Province State Minister Srijana Rai, and in Surkhet by Surya Nath Yogi, Vice Chair of the Karnali Province Planning Commission.

Similarly, in Itahari the speakers included Girls in ICT Nepal Coordinator Roja Kiran Basukala; NTA Assistant Director Om Prakash Mahatto; e‑Governance Specialist Krishna Kumar Mandal; IT Engineer Archana Karn; Nepal Telecom Senior Engineer Promisha Karn; Rozina Dahal of the School of Engineering and Technology, Purbanchal University; Nepal Telecom Director Vimlesh Jha; and Tantranath Jha of Purbanchal Campus.

As international expert speakers, Senior Consultant Abhimanyu Singh of Ernst & Young India and Cross‑Thematic Programme Officer Caroline Troyne of ITU participated.

Likewise, in Surkhet the speakers included Dr. Kamal Lamichhane, Director of Nepal Telecom Karnali Province; Nepal Telecom Senior Engineer Sushma Gautam; CAN Federation Secretary Ram Krishna Rawal; Lecturer Dhirendra Kumar Yadav of Mid‑Western University; NTA Assistant Director Kailash Karki; Aftab Ansari of Everest Net; Dr. Rajan Suwal, Dean of the School of Engineering, Mid‑Western University; and Ncell Senior Engineer Suraj Rajak.

Also, as an international expert speaker, AI specialist and Chief Advisor of BlueSapphire‑NextGen AI SIEM, Bhat Dittakavi, was present.

On the second day, experimental sessions were conducted at both Itahari and Surkhet. These included training on how to use AI tools; how to write prompts; how to stay safe in the cyber world; what to do and what not to do online.

Participants in the emerging technologies training said that it not only helped them understand new technologies but also gifted them new learning.

Describing the program as very useful for young women building careers in ICT, participants emphasized that similar trainings, workshops, and programs should be organized outside Kathmandu in the future.

On the final day, certificates were also awarded to the participants. The closing session in Itahari was attended by Koshi Province Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Ravati Raman Bhandari, while in Surkhet it was graced by Pushpraj Shahi, Secretary of the Karnali Province Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, and Suryamani Gautam of the Chief Minister’s Office.

Such programs are believed to have a long‑term impact on gender equality in technology, youth inclusion, and the creation of a digitally inclusive society.
