WhatsApp now lets users encrypt their chat backups in the cloud

WhatsApp began rolling out end-to-end encryption for Google Drive and iCloud backups on 14 th of October, 2021. Months after the Facebook-owned business tested the upgrade internally, the distribution has begun. WhatsApp said last month that it would begin offering end-to-end encrypted cloud backups to Android and iOS customers. The opt-in option will help customers secure their backups from third-party access, such as Google and Apple's cloud storage services.

It also claims to preserve WhatsApp communication history kept in backups. In a statement on his Facebook page, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the deployment of end-to-end encryption for cloud backups. The functionality will be gradually rolled out internationally for both Android and iOS users to give an extra layer of safety to cloud backups. Since 2016, WhatsApp has made end-to-end encryption the default for all communications sent over the service. According to the business, sophisticated encryption secures over 100 billion communications every day as they pass between over two billion users across the world.

WhatsApp users, on the other hand, have discovered a need for the same level of encryption for conversation history and other cloud-backed material that is accessible on the app. As a result, end-to-end encryption for cloud backups was launched. "If someone decides to back up their conversation history using end-to-end encryption, only they will have access to it, and no one, not even WhatsApp, will be able to decrypt it." "Neither WhatsApp nor the backup service provider (such as Apple) will have access to their end-to-end encryption key nor their end-to-end encrypted backup," according to the firm. On both Android and iOS devices, WhatsApp is presently rolling out end-to-end encryption for cloud backups.

To obtain the update, make sure you're using the most recent version of WhatsApp. Unlike the present end-to-end encryption that is enabled by default, end-to-end encryption for cloud backups must be enabled explicitly. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backups > End-to-End Encrypted Backups and then follow the on-screen instructions. For your backup, you'll need to create a password. Alternatively, a 64-bit encryption key might be used. After you've completed the on-screen instructions, press Done and wait for WhatsApp to create your end-to-end encrypted backup. Because the encryption will use part of the device's local resources, you may need to connect your phone to a power source.

It's crucial to remember that if you lose your password or key, you won't be able to restore your end-to-end encrypted backup. Last month, WhatsApp promised to offer end-to-end encrypted cloud backups. It was also seen testing end-to-end encrypted cloud backups on Android and iOS earlier this month.
