The platform's audio-only chatrooms, Reddit Talk, now enable recordings. This means you may now listen to earlier speeches as well as use playback options that enable you navigate to certain timestamps, pause / unpause recordings, and fast-forward or reverse them, according to a Reddit blog post. This should make recording and distributing live podcast-like sessions considerably easy for users.
Reddit also announced that Talk will be going to the web, bringing with it some useful features (which are currently accessible on mobile). Listeners will be able to raise their hands to talk, and moderators will be able to silence people and remove them as speakers. Talk for the desktop app will be available "later this month," according to the platform. Additionally, the software allows listeners to communicate in real time using text and emoji.
People could only raise their hands when they wanted to speak before this move, so having two extra methods to interact could make conversations more entertaining, especially if some users want to make a comment but don't want to get on the mike. Finally, Reddit claims it's developing a "live bar" that will show at the top of the mobile home feed, similar to the bar that appears when someone you follow is in a Space on Twitter.
The bar will display when live discussions are taking place and in which communities you are a member of. Since the launch of Talk in April, only moderators who sign up for a waitlist have been permitted to moderate the audio-only sessions. It doesn't appear that Reddit intends to give normal users control over Talk. "We have no intentions to offer the live audio capability to Reddit users outside of moderators," the company informed TechCrunch.
Medias reached out to Reddit for comment but did not receive a response right away. Recordings are already available in Spaces and Clubhouse, so it's no surprise that Reddit has opted to add the functionality as well. Even Nevertheless, as it tries to compete with Clubhouse, Reddit appears to be gradually adding more functionality to Talk (and all those other clones).
