Meta, Formerly Facebook, Acquires VR Fitness App Supernatural

Following Facebook's rebranding as Meta, within, the startup behind the virtual reality training app Supernatural, was acquired. According to The Verge, Meta just announced that the studio behind Supernatural will be joining the firm, bringing the total number of studios controlled by what was once known as Facebook's Oculus division to seven.

Within will continue to work on the popular fitness app, as well as helping Meta's Reality Labs "improve future hardware to accommodate VR fitness applications," according to the business. Within's acquisition by Meta isn't entirely unexpected. Facebook has spent the last several years acquiring a slew of successful VR firms, including ready at Dawn, the creators of Lone Echo, the team behind Beat Saber, and others working on projects that have been dubbed the "VR Fortnite" and "Roblox" by some. With movement-based, high-impact cardio exercises, Supernatural has been one of the true success stories in virtual reality fitness.

The switch from Facebook to Meta comes as the world's largest social media giant faces criticism from politicians and authorities over its market dominance, algorithmic judgments, and monitoring of abuses on its platforms.Speaking at the company's live-streamed virtual and augmented reality conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the new name represented the company's efforts investing in the metaverse, rather than the company's namesake social networking site, which will remain named Facebook.

According to a photograph of the gadget spotted inside one of Meta's iPhone applications, the company is also working on a wristwatch with a front-facing camera and rounded screen. A removable wrist strap and a button at the top of the watch case are claimed to be included. The huge display appears to be identical to the Apple Watch's.
